Ahoya placed 14th place while Kawira was 15th in the AJC
Kenyan tennis youngster Seline Ahoya was the highest ranked player among the squad of five players that graced the Confederation of African Tennis Africa Junior Championships hard court tournament held in Togo.
With all Kenyans playing in the classification matches after suffering first and second round exits, Seline Ahoya was able to grind out a 14th place finish. Ahoya got to the second round pof the main draw where she went down in straight sets (6-1, 6-2) to Wassila Achouri of Morocco. Her path through the placement matches saw her record a loss in the 5th place matchup to Benin’s Naomie Marete before outclassing her Kenyan compatriot Nancy Kawira 4-1,4-2.
Kawira - an East Africa games medalist - also made herself a big statement in the big stage, finishing in 15th position, thanks to a final place victory over Emmly George of Zimbabwe.
The other lady, Michelle Murage could only carve out a 28th place finish after going down to Ghanaian Christabel Eduafo Collins 4-1, 4-1. Her only victory in the week-long tournament came against Ugandan Claire Nalubuulwa in her second match from the main draw.
The boy’s side was however not overly-impressive as compared to the girls as both Ayush Bhandari and Jeff Hesbon finished 29th and 31st respectively.
Hesbon recorded only one win in the tournament - that came in his last game against Ugandan Jonah Sssentogo while Bhandari beat in the last playoff match against Kossi Djogbessi of Togo.
The championships come to an end on Tuesday with the final matchups and closing ceremony lined up.
Nigeria’s Oluwaseun Ogunsakin will face off Ahmed Darmoul of Tunisia in the boy’s final while Sahnoun Nour (Tunisia) will take on Van Zyl Janie of South Africa.
